How to Choose Bed Sheets: Materials, Weaves, Sizes and Care
Good sheets make a big difference to how you sleep. Here's what to look at when you shop.
Materials
- Cotton: breathable and easy to wash. A popular all-round choice.
- Microfiber (polyester): soft, wrinkle-resistant and usually budget-friendly, but can feel warmer.
- Bamboo-derived fabrics (such as viscose or lyocell): smooth and soft, often chosen by people who sleep warm.
- Linen: textured, breathable and gets softer with washing.

Weave
- Percale: crisp, matte and cool.
- Sateen: smoother with a slight sheen, and a little warmer.

Thread count
Thread count is the number of threads per square inch. Higher isn't always better. Fiber quality and weave matter more than a very high number.
Check your mattress depth
Measure your mattress height, including any topper, and make sure the fitted sheet's pocket depth is deep enough.
Standard US mattress sizes
- Twin: 38 x 75 in
- Twin XL: 38 x 80 in
- Full: 54 x 75 in
- Queen: 60 x 80 in
- King: 76 x 80 in
- California King: 72 x 84 in
Care
Wash new sheets before first use, follow the care label, and avoid very high dryer heat to reduce shrinking and pilling.
